Temperature and volumetric accuracy: when 3 °C costs you a decimal place

Glassware is calibrated at a reference temperature. Work far from it and both the glass and the liquid conspire against your fourth decimal.
01Two expansion effects, one direction
Water expands ~0.021 % per °C near room temperature; borosilicate ~0.001 %. The liquid dominates: 100 mL of water measured at 30 °C in a flask calibrated at 20 °C is short by roughly 0.21 mL — twice the Class A tolerance, from temperature alone.
02Why Indian-market glass is calibrated at 27 °C
IS standards specify 27 °C reference to match tropical lab reality; ISO uses 20 °C. Mixing glassware calibrated to different references inside one method introduces a systematic bias. Check the etched reference temperature — every Vitreon instrument states it beside the capacity.
03Practical rules
Let solutions equilibrate to room temperature before final dilution; never make up to the mark with warm liquid; for work at the fourth decimal, apply the correction table in our certificate portal or weigh instead of measuring.
