How to actually read a calibration certificate (and spot a fake one)

Measured value, uncertainty, traceability chain: the three lines that matter, and the red flags auditors look for.
01The three lines that matter
A real calibration certificate states (1) the measured value — not just 'PASS'; (2) the expanded uncertainty with coverage factor (k=2 means ~95 % confidence); (3) the traceability chain — which balance, which reference weights, which national laboratory certified them. Missing any of the three, you are holding a compliance letter, not a calibration certificate.
02Uncertainty must beat tolerance
The calibration uncertainty should be at most a third of the instrument's tolerance (the TUR rule). A 100 mL Class A flask at ±0.10 mL needs measurement uncertainty near ±0.03 mL or better. A certificate quoting ±0.08 mL uncertainty on that flask technically proves nothing.
03Red flags
Identical measured values across a batch (real measurements scatter), round numbers everywhere, no serial number linking paper to glass, a 'certificate' with no accreditation scope. Auditors check whether the paper could survive a phone call to the issuing lab.
04Verification as a feature
Every serialised Vitreon instrument can be verified at vitreon — enter the serial, see the live record: measured value, uncertainty, operator, balance and its NPL-traceable certificate number. Your auditor does not have to take paper on faith, and neither do you.
